Looking for a quick make for those Xmas Craft Fairs? Me too! I still attend craft fairs as a stallholder, so I decided to make up my Ocean Kiss Autumn Ear Warmer with some sparkly Caron Simply Soft Party yarn.

These are so quick to make (I have it down to approx. 1 hour with no interruptions!) and you will be able to make at least 2, maybe 3 out of one ball; depending on the size you are making.

You could also use up the scraps from each ball and make a couple of two colour ones, for instance adding the X and Cluster stitch part in a different colour.

The Caron Simply Soft Party yarn is slightly thicker being an Aran weight than the Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable I used in the original post. I kept to the same number of stitches and used a 6mm hook size.

Why are we running out of time?

Well, Facebook is changing and you might not see my posts in the future!

So you Follow and/or Like my Facebook Page Crochet 24/7, thank-you so much!

Would you assume then, that whenever I write a new post or release a new pattern – you would see it in your Facebook News Feed? right?

Uh, sorry to say no!

 

Facebook Pages you like or follow

Did you know that Facebook has started to limit the posts you see from all the Pages you follow? – even when you have told them (through the pages you like and follow) what your interests are; and whose posts you like to see regularly?

I opened my Facebook Page Crochet 24/7 this year, and have worked hard to build the audience. Investing time to find you all interesting fun content; as well as sharing my new patterns, and other designer’s new work, that I think you may like too.

My page following is still small by some standards at 850 (and I appreciate every single one of you), but when I write a new post; sometimes I am lucky if it reaches 50 of you, that means 800 of you don’t even see it!

Once a few people start to like or comment on the post, then Facebook will show it to a few more of you over the next few days. This is what happens when a crochet designer offers a limited time discount code; and you miss it as you don’t even see the post until after it’s finished!

But what Facebook really encourage and want is for the Page Owners to pay them via advertising for the post to reach all of their own followers, which for crochet designers offering free patterns is a bit tricky!

They want me to advertise my post to my own Page Followers; just to ensure they all get to see it? 

Of course many people follow lots of pages and don’t always want to comment or like, because they know that their friends and family then see everything; and it can be a bit boring for a non-crochet family member, to see their feed full of what their Mum/Granny?Sister have liked.

It doesn’t mean they don’t want to see the posts in future or they haven’t read or looked at the content; if this was the case they could just “unlike” the page.

What’s the answer then?

Well it’s all about the groups that you join! And if you prefer email the newsletters you sign up for!

Crochet Designer’s Facebook Groups

Closed Groups – most of your favourite crochet designers’ in addition to their Facebook Page also have Facebook Closed Groups that you can join; and within the group you will see everything the designer shares, you won’t miss anything!

I think sometimes people like/follow a page; and then assume the group content will be the same – but it really isn’t.

Crochet designers’ build their groups into communities, sharing far more with members than they do on their Pages, and offering exclusive discounts and information.

Groups are really fun, with longer threads of conversation and active members get to know each other better.

In addition often the designer will share their new designs at an earlier stage with sneek peaks, asking members for feedback on colours, sizes, etc, ask for testers, offer discount coupons and give-aways just for their group members etc.

The other great thing about groups is that if you want to comment, like, share a picture of your own work only the other group members see it, so a group has more of a club feel than a page.

All conversations within a closed group can only be seen by group members.

If you favourite a group you also then have a short-cut to ensure you see posts within the group you have not yet read, so you can catch up all in one go, reading through the more recent posts.

 

Crochet Designer’s Newsletter by email

Also if you like and follow a designer’s Facebook Page, have you checked on their website to see if they send out a newsletter by email?

Most of them do and have an area usually on the right hand side of their website with “sign-up” or “subscribe here” and often you can get one of their free patterns as a PDF as a welcome.

All you do is pop in your email address, you will receive an email asking you to re-confirm that you want to subscribe, you just click on that, and you will then receive one more email to welcome you.

Each time they publish a new post you will then receive an email with the link, you can unsubscribe at any time by clicking unsubscribe – details are always on the emails on how to do this.

Where do you keep your crochet notes?

As you all know I am just 9 months into my new career as a crochet designer, and I have already developed some very bad habits!

One of those bad habits is the way I design and take notes; at the same time!

I am a really…… lazy ……… note taker!

So then ! Where do you keep your notes? 

Do you write on the pattern? Sticky notes that always fall off! Cards that you pull out and never put back!

Maybe you religiously keep the size hook you were using with your half finished project? (Hats off to you! and well done! if you actually remember to do this!)

How many time have you returned to a project to find you cannot remember the hook size you were using? Or you can’t remember what stitch you used?

So when I design, I have a very rough idea in my head, I pick up my crochet hook and yarn; and just start crocheting, if I don’t like it, I undo it and start again, trying out different stitches – does this sound familiar? am I the only one who works like this?

If I’m being really, really good, then I will scribble some notes down as I work. Usually I manage the starting chain needed, and then the first few rows, after that ….. I get carried away. In my own little world, and completely forget to count stitches and rows.

More often I am very bad! I sometimes write a note on what I thought I did, but when I go back, I realise I didn’t actually do it like I thought!

Now don’t worry I do tidy all of this sloppiness up way before I publish my patterns; but I often cause myself double, and triple work, as a result.

My worse time was when I worked on three patterns at the same time, finished the items; and then returned to the notes and just went:-

“Oh dear!” “I can’t even follow what I did myself!”

 ( I said something quite a bit stronger to myself, you know I did!)

After a couple of design mistakes; where I have had to make a whole new sample because I couldn’t remember what on earth I had done on the original, and a whole design for broomstick crochet un-published as yet, because I just can’t face trying to read my truly awful design notes – something had to change.

I started looking around for a notebook/journal type thing, that would make it easier for me to record all the key elements I needed, when I come to type up my design, and then turn it into a pattern, someone else can follow.

I came across the My Crochet Project Bible designed by Lucy Hart, Chief Geek, from Stationery Geek an online store. As well as having a love of stationery; Lucy is also a yarn fanatic, and crocheter!

 Ta Dah!  Yeh! Lucy is one of us! she knows exactly what we all need from a journal.

I read Lucy’s post on starting to learn to crochet (and she was talking my language!) and finding herself making notes and ticking off rows etc on patterns (yep! me! me! – I did that too). And how quickly as you learn more, you read the pattern, but then find yourself altering it slightly, for your own spin on the pattern.

The multiple I have given you will allow any changes of size you need to do, the finished size in the photo measures 20” around by 4” and fits my head circumference 21”.

Measure your head before you start (where you would comfortabland check how much “spring” the yarn you are using has, and go up or down on your starting chain as needed.

In this way, the ear warmer can be made any size for adult or child.

The yarn I used is Caron Simply Soft Party yarn, it’s an Aran weight and 99% acrylic, with 1% metallized polyester.

Check your gauge, I used a 6mm hook, and kept to the same number of stitches I used for the Unforgettable which is a slightly thinner yran than the Caron.

CH1 – Does not count as a stitch

Corner 2 Corner (C2C) is one of the crochet techniques that I really wanted to give a try, and I have to say, I can see why people say it’s a bit addictive, once you have learned. The first few rows of C2C, it does feel a bit weird, because it’s hard to “see” the shape you are forming. But, once you get to the turn, to maintain the width, it’s really plain sailing from that point onwards.

When I was in Chicago in July, I bought a ball of the Lion Brand Scarfie to bring home to the UK, as it can be both expensive and difficult to order from the UK, plus it’s more difficult online to see the range of colours the ombre will feature.

This really pretty mint and silver I was really drawn to, and if you are tempted to order some from the US, let me reassure you, this yarn is so worth it, it’s really soft (and I don’t usually like any wool content!) 78% acrylic, 18% wool, the colours are soft and muted and blend in well together.

You ladies in the US are so lucky to have the full range of colours to choose from.

As I said, I am new to C2C, so when I was looking through my stash to choose what to use, I pounced on this ball of Scarfie, as I thought it better also to work in a light colour, so I could count my stitches and rows more easily.

I studied the technique, and then decided on using just one stitch the UK TRC or US DC and using the simple chain space, as an added decorative touch.

I met a lovely lady in Chicago whilst I was shopping, who told me she was taught to crochet by her grandmother, but only knew one stitch, and this is probably the case for many who were taught as children by relatives.

As this is a pattern designed for a beginner, I have put more detailed explanations in the pattern, so feel free to skip through if you are more experienced!.

So for all you folks who know one stitch, like to work flat on one piece, use one ball of bulky yarn, and are looking for a project to complete in a weekend!

Special Stitches Used : –

UK – TRC DEC:- Treble Crochet decrease worked over 2 stitches

Yarn round hook (yrh) pull loop up from 1st TRC, yrh, pull through first 2 loops on your hook; yrh, pull loop up from next TRC, yrh, pull through first 2 loops on your hook, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh, pull through remaining 2 loops.

USA – DC DEC:- Double Crochet decrease worked over 2 stitches

Yarn round hook (yrh) pull loop up from 1st DC, yrh, pull through first 2 loops on your hook; yrh, pull loop up from next DC, yrh, pull through first 2 loops on your hook, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh, pull through remaining 2 loops.

 

Yarn Used: – Lion Brand Scarfie Mint/Silver 150g ball Bulky (5) 78% Acrylic, 22% Wool 312 yards/285m per ball – 1 ball was used for this pattern.

 

Hook Size Used: – 9mm crochet hook

Gauge: – 4” 10 UK TRC / US DC

Additional Note:-

You are beginning in one corner A and making a triangle so increasing; both at the beginning and the end of each row.

Once you reach your desired width you will stop increasing on both sides, instead you will be increasing on one end of the row, and decreasing at the other end of the row. In this way you are still working at a diagonal, but you are maintaining the width of your cowl. B

When you have the required length C; you will decrease both at the beginning, and at the end of your rows, and you will finally finish in a corner. D

My finished piece laid flat measured 44” long and 12” on my starting end (left in the picture), and 12.5” on my finishing end (on the right in the picture above).

You can see in the picture my finished end is slightly pointier, this could have just been my tension changed. I could have blocked it to make it more even, but as I will be seaming it to the other end, I didn’t worry about it.

 

Instructions written using USA crochet terms.

 

CH3 – Does not count as a stitch throughout.

ROW 1:- CH4 (counts as 1st DC this time only), 2 DC 4th CH from hook, turn (3 DC)

ROW 2:- CH3 (remember it does not count), 2 DC in 1st DC (your increase) , DC in next DC, 2 DC (your increase) in last DC, turn (5 DC)

ROW 3:- CH3, 2 DC in 1st DC (your increase) , DC in next DC, and repeat across; 2 DC in last DC (your increase), turn (7 DC)

ROW 4:- Repeat Row 3 (9 DC)

 

ROW 5:- Repeat Row 3 (11 DC)

 

ROW 6:– Repeat Row 3 (13 DC)

ROW 7:- CH3, 2 DC in 1st DC *(CH1, Skip 1, DC) *repeat 5 times in total; CH1, Skip 1; 2 DC in last DC (9 DC 6 CH1)

ROW 8:- CH3, 2 DC in 1st DC (your increase) , DC into the CH stitch (you could go under the CH into the space; but if you go into the chain stitch it pulls the space out  to look like a star shape), DC into the DC; and repeat across; 2 DC in last DC (your increase), turn (17 DC)

ROW 9:- Repeat Row 3 (19 DC)

ROW 10:- Repeat Row 3 (21 DC)

ROW 11:- Repeat Row 3 (23 DC)

ROW 12:- Repeat Row 3 (25 DC)

ROW 13:- Repeat Row 3 (27 DC)

ROW 14:- Repeat Row 7 (16 DC, 13 CH1)

ROW 15:- Repeat Row 8 (31 DC)

ROW 16:- Repeat Row 3 (33 DC) (at this point my piece measured 11 1/4”)

 

Begin the Centre Part of your Cowl – maintaining the width but still working on a diagonal.

 

ROW 17:- CH3, DC DEC (your decrease) using the 1st and 2nd DC; DC in each DC across; 2 DC (increase) in the last DC, turn (33 DC)

ROW 18:- CH3 2 DC in 1st DC (increase) DC across until 2 DC remain; DC DEC (your decrease) using the last 2 DC (33 DC)

ROW 19:- Repeat Row 17 (33 DC)

ROW 20:- Repeat Row 18 (33 DC)

ROW 21:- CH3, DC DEC using the 1st and 2nd DC; *(CH1, Skip 1, DC) *repeat 15 times in total; 2 DC in last DC (18 DC, 15 CH1)

ROW 22:- CH3, 2 DC in 1st DC (your increase) , DC into the next 2 DC , then DC into the CH stitch (you could go under into the space, but if you go into the stitch it pulls the space to look like a star shape), DC into the DC; and repeat across; DC DEC in last 2 DC (your decrease), turn (33 DC)

ROW 23:- Repeat Row 17

ROW 24:- Repeat Row 18

(If you want a longer length Cowl then carry on repeating the Row sequence adding in your “Stars Row” at every 7th row)

I carried on till Row 59, (so I had 43 rows in my middle section) and then started my final section on Row 60.

 

Final section to decrease on both ends of your rows to finish in a corner.

You can make your cowl as long as you like, but begin your final section following a row ending in a decrease.

It will take you 16 rows to decrease back to a corner so just be sure to leave yourself sufficient yarn.

 

Begin Decrease.

Row 60:- CH3, DC DEC using the 1st and 2nd DC; DC into the next DC, and repeat across; DC DEC using the last 2 DC, turn (31 DC)

Row 61:- CH3, DC DEC using the 1st and 2nd DC; DC into the next DC, and repeat across; DC DEC using the last 2 DC, turn (29 DC)

Don’t forget to add in a Stars row when you are decreasing! Just decrease at each end of the row and then CH1, Skip 1, DC as before.

Remaining rows – repeat Rows 60 and 61,  until you have 3 DC remaining.

FINAL ROW:-  to make a neat corner, DC DEC all 3 DC together, the same way as you have been decreasing 2. CH3, Yrh, pull up loop from 1st DC, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh pull up loop from the 2nd DC, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh, pull loop up from 3rd DC, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh, pull through 2 loops.

Cut your yarn, leaving a tail to weave in. Pull yarn through final loop on hook and then weave in the end to hide.

 

SEAMING:-

To seam together lay your piece flat on the floor and look again at my diagram

Pick up your finishing corner and make one full twist anti-clockwise before D lays on top of A and C lays on top of B.

Seam together the short ends. I crocheted them together using a UK HTR or a US HDC. But there are several methods depending on how noticeable you want the seam to be.

My method is just to bring the back piece and front piece together, yrh, go through stitches on both pieces, yrh, pull through, and pull through all three loops on the hook.

 

 

 

 

As I mentioned I didn’t block my cowl, and I haven’t added a border as I like the way it drapes as it is, even if it looks a little raw. By using the starting CH3, you have a nice even and bumpy edge which I think works well with the design.

I am so excited to bring you all the Ocean Kiss Autumn Ruana, my latest pattern in the Ocean Kiss series. The stitch pattern combination looks so pretty in different weight yarns, that I decided to design an Autumn collection in a heavier weight yarn.

What is a Ruana? It’s a poncho-style outer garment typical of the Andes region of Venezuela and Colombia, particularly in the Boyacá department and Antioquia.

As you can see from my pictures, you can wear the Ruana in several different ways, you could add a shawl pin or button to secure it.

The Ocean Kiss Autumn Ruana is a perfect weight for this time of the year; you can wear it in the house instead of turning on the central heating; or outside as the days start to get cooler.

As well as my love affair with Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, I also really love the softness, drape, and beautiful subtle colour changes of Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable. It gives a really lovely hazy look of expensive mohair without the itchiness, being 100% acrylic it’s soft and most people can wear it next to the skin with no problem.

Before I began designing myself, I saw a knitted cardigan on the Red Heart website; and I asked my Mum to make it for me. Mum loved both the yarn and the cardigan pattern, and she ended up making four in the end, two for me in different colours, one for herself, and one for my sister. We all live in different places so it’s not a problem us all having the same cardigan!

So although I know from experience, you have to work carefully, and be gentle with this yarn, especially if you need to undo any rows, it’s absolutely worth the extra effort, for lovely finished garments that also wash really well.

Whenever, I get to visit anywhere in the US, I always stock up on Red Heart yarn; it isn’t broadly distributed in the UK, you can find it, but it’s expensive; and you have to buy it online. This was the first time I had seen the shade Pearly before and I really loved it.

Pearly is a soft muted palette of lilac, mauve, petal pink, light grey, dove grey, and cream. It marks a bit of a change of colour for me too,  as with my recent Unforgettable Hazel Blanket and Cowl Pattern’s I used Red Heart Unforgettable in Tidal  – a mix of blues and greens.

As you will have noticed from my design choices, I do tend to be drawn to blue tones.

Anyway, I bought 10 balls in Michaels and I have used 6 for my new pattern the Ocean Kiss Autumn Ruana which is a paid pattern.

The Ruana uses the same stitch combination as the Ocean Kiss Summer Collection patterns, you simply make two rectangles and seam together halfway to form the back panel.

The stitch pattern is Intermediate but the construction of the two rectangles is easy so if you are fairly new to crochet but fancy a challenge, why not have a go at making yourself something to wear other than a scarf or wrap!

For those of you following me,  you will recall in July I released the pattern Unforgettable Hazel for a wheelchair sized blanket/afghan, that I gifted to my husbands Nanny Hazel for her 100th birthday.

 

Hazel loved her blanket and so did many of you, I had some really wonderful comments back, and the free pattern was widely shared.

I had some requests for a cowl or scarf, and I thought yes! you are all so right! The blanket is so full of texture and squishiness, the stitch combination really lends itself well to a cowl,  or you could just skip the seaming, and carry on crocheting to make a scarf.

 

Although, I have stayed with Red Heart Unforgettable in the colour Tidal for this new pattern, you could use any Worsted weight yarn or chunky yarn, as long as you use a hook 2-3 sizes above the manufacturer’s recommendation, to enable you to get the looser textured effect.

Check your count on every (US) SC and (UK) DC Row, it’s really easy to miss one and then very annoying if you have, as you won’t notice it until you have completed the HDC rows, and begun the Shells or Clusters.

Take 30 seconds to count the (US) SC or (UK) DC to avoid frogging 8 rows of (US) HDC or (UK) HTR!

Before seaming the finished cowl measures 61” length and 10” wide. The cowl can be made to any size you want, by just using the multiple of 3+3(+1 for the foundation row).

If you prefer a shorter cowl then using 1 ball of Unforgettable I reached 33” (82cm), and without completing the optional border I would have had enough yarn remaining to seam the short cowl/neck-warmer.

CH1 – Does not count as a stitch

CH3 – Counts as a stitch

CH4 – Counts as the first TRC, meaning the very first space you could place a stitch, is already “used”

 

Multiple 3+3 (+1 for the foundation chain).

 

ROW 1:- CH28, DC into 2nd CH from hook, DC in each CH to end of row. (27 DC), turn

 

ROW 2:- CH1, HDC into 1st DC, and then HDC in each DC, repeat across, (27 HDC), turn

 

ROW 3:- CH1, HDC into each HDC, using the front two loops, repeat across, (27 HDC), turn

 

ROWS 4 through to 9 :-  Repeat Row 3

 

ROW 10:- CH3, DC Cluster in first HDC, *(CH1, Skip 1, DC Cluster in next HDC) * repeat across, after 13th DC Cluster, (don’t CH1), Skip 1, DC into final HDC. (13 Clusters), turn

 

ROW 11:– CH1, SC (in 1st DC), SC in top of cluster (2nd SC), SC in the CH1 space, and continue across, SC in top of last Cluster, SC in CH1 space, SC into 3rd CH of previous row. (27 SC), turn

 

Row 12:- CH3, DC Cluster in SC, * (CH1, Skip 1, DC Cluster in next SC) * repeat across, after 13th DC Cluster, (don’t CH1), Skip 1, DC into final SC, turn

 

Row 13:- CH1, SC (in 1st DC), SC in top of cluster (2nd SC), SC in the CH1 space, and continue across, SC in top of last Cluster, SC in CH1 space, SC into 3rd CH of previous row. (27 SC), turn

 

Row 14:- Repeat Row 12

 

Row 15:- Repeat Row 13

 

ROW 16:- Repeat Row 2

 

ROW 17:- through to ROW 23:- Repeat Row 3

 

ROW 24:- CH4, Skip 1, Shell in next HDC, * (Skip 2, Shell in next HDC), * repeat across. After 8th Shell, Skip 2, DC in last HDC. (8 Shells)

 

ROW 25:- CH4, Skip 2 DC and make a V stitch in 3rd DC (middle DC) of 1st Cluster (you will have 4 DC stitches in between each V made), repeat across making a V stitch in the 3rd DC of each Cluster, after 8th V stitch, skip 2 DC, and DC in 3rd CH of previous row CH4. (8 V-stitch)

 

ROW 26:- CH4, Shell in the CH1 space of each V stitch, after 8th Shell, Skip 1 and DC in 3rd CH of previous row CH4 (8 Shells)

 

ROW 27:- Repeat Row 25 (8 V stitch)

 

ROW 28:- Repeat Row 26 (8 Shells)

 

ROW 29:- Repeat Row 25 (8 V stitch)

 

ROW 30:- CH1, SC into 1st DC, 2 SC into V stitch space , SC under CH between the V’s. Continue across, after 8th V, SC into CH space, SC under 4th CH starting previous row, SC into 3rd CH starting previous row (27 SC)

(Check your count! You should have 27 SC! it’s really easy to mis-count between the Shells and V’s)

 

You will now repeat ROWS 2-30, until you reach your desired length of cowl!

My cowl was 3 further repeats and will fit comfortably, twisted twice around the neck, measuring 61” long before seaming, and 10” wide, you could also stop at 33” (1 ball of Unforgettable) and make a shorter cowl (neck-warmer)

Finish on a SC Row to enable easy seaming!

 

Bring the short edges together ensuring both wrong or right sides depending on whether you want your seam to show. Right side can easily be seen by looking at the cluster stitch and ensuring the puffier side is on the right side.

Seam together with your choice of closure, mattress seam etc. or my own preference is always to crochet the seam.

 

Bring the 2 short sides together, you have the 27 SC on each side. Yarn over, then insert your crochet hook through all four loops of the 1st SC on each side, yarn over, pull through the four loops, yarn over, and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

 

Continue along the seam, and to finish cut your yarn and slip the end through the loop on your hook and pull tightly. Weave ends in.

 

Optional Border:-

Re-attach yarn, and HDC around the whole cowl on both edges, no set number of stitches, just try to keep the space between each stitch fairly even.

Cut your yarn, leaving a tail to weave in. Pull yarn through final loop on hook and then weave in the end to hide.

More specifically, what happens at a CGOA Conference?

 

Six months ago, I jumped into my new solo business venture – to make my income as a crochet designer.

Coming from the corporate world of business , I knew I needed to thoroughly research my market.

Part of that research involved checking out the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA) website, finding information on established designers, the popularity of crochet as a hobby, where you could take crochet professionally.

Whilst on the website, I  found the details of the upcoming CGOA Conference. The conference is held annually with the location moving each year, and for anyone who loves crochet.

Again, as someone accustomed to, attending trade and industry conferences in their field; it was entirely normal for me to to sign up, and plan to attend.

Chicago! here I come ………

 

My family thought it a little strange, to travel all the way from UK to Chicago, to attend a 5 night conference completely focused on crochet.

Funny, isn’t it, if your husband tells you he is going on a golfing holiday with his buddies – do you look at him like he has grown an extra head?

If your children come to you and ask if they can go on their school trip – do you look back at them in a bemused fashion?

All of us like and need to belong ….

we enjoy spending time with; and talking to other people, who have the same interests as us.

When we are passionate about something, we want to find out more; when something catches our interest we are keen to learn more about it.

We want to practice and get better at what we enjoy doing; improving our skill, adding to our repertoire.

We want to purchase accessories that go with our interests, storage to keep those accessories in one place, new tools, books, DVD’s, take lessons with experienced teachers, who can help us to practise and improve.

The CGOA Conference then, all of the above, and so much more.

 

Step inside …..

 

As I walked through the doors, and stepped into the hotel lobby, I realised immediately, this was no ordinary industry conference………………. people were sitting in comfy chairs and sofas, all around the lobby, crocheting.

Everywhere, I looked people were happy and smiling, chatting to each other, and working on their latest crochet project.

OK, well maybe they all know each other, and are attending the conference in groups…. – uh no …. as I found out once I had stored my luggage, and wandered downstairs.

No-one looks at you strangely, if you stop by their table, or sit down near to them.

All the people I met were open and friendly, and all very happy to talk about what they were making, and asking you the same in return.

There was a relaxed, chilled out vibe in the air, I felt like I had found my tribe.

 

Considering crochet is often seen as a singular hobby – crocheting alone at home whilst watching CNN or Netflix, it was great to find that everyone was keen to mix, and mingle with each other.

 

Formalities!

During the short formal part of the Conference – the Business Meeting element – everyone got free yarn on their seats (thank-you to all of the sponsors – we got lots of free yarn throughout the different events  #leisurearts #redheart #bernatyarn #susanbates #lionbrandyarn).

Again, looking around the room from crochet hobbyists to well known crochet designers – everyone was listening intently, whilst they crocheted! The observant would have seen sneak peeks of some lovely upcoming designs!

 

Classes!

So many classes – in excess of 50 different classes, on techniques that were brand new to me, from leading industry teachers, published authors, and amazing designers at the top of their game – the quality of teaching, the samples, handouts etc. were amazing and truly something for everyone from beginner to advanced.

The Northern Illinois Chapter  (a Guild has Chapters – like local clubs connected to the centre) were on hand throughout the conference; with not only the winding station (for new hanks of yarn purchased in the market-place), also lots of info on the local area outside the hotel.

 

They also crocheted everyone butterfly conference pins, and the stunning snowflake table decorations for the banquet.

A Buddy breakfast was held for all newbies (first time conference attendees) to wear their white butterfly pins to identify themselves, and the mentors they had been matched with wore blue butterfly pins.

 

This helped throughout the conference to encourage conversation, if someone was looking a little lost.

 

From a newbie perspective it was very easy to spot mentors, if you had questions – Margie was my lovely mentor.

Gift Exchange!

This is a lovely idea and another way to meet new people.

You each take a crochet item you have made and would like to receive, using materials under $15, and gift wrap it with your contact details.

You hand in your gift and take a ticket, each person who gives a gift, receives a gift, and then you can get in touch with the person who made the item.

The quality of the various gifts I saw was amazing, and hours would have gone into making them all.

My gift was made by Dee Anne Kimmel – a lovely shawl made from Lion Brand Mandala, which I was thrilled to receive and very much appreciate all the time, effort and care that went into making it.

Meet the editors!

For crochet designers; (you know like I am trying to be!), there was the unique opportunity for a meet and greet session. The editors from leading crochet magazines, and brand ambassadors for yarn companies were all together in one room, seated at different tables, for you to meet with 121.

This was really a money cannot buy experience, a thousand times more valuable that pitching to each one via email.

To be able to talk to them face to face; ask all the cheeky questions; like “how much do you on average pay for a design?”, “how do you handle copyright?”. To discuss with them how you should submit your ideas, and concepts.

From their perspective; looking for new designers; they could touch and feel examples of your work, and see whether they liked your “style”, designs, and whether you were someone they could see themselves working with in the future.

Regular readers know that I genuinely love Lion Brand yarn, I like wearing it, I like designing with it, and I like the company, a family company now with 5th generation running it.

So should you attend CGOA next year?

If you are a hobbyist crocheter, you will love the great classes and the laid back atmosphere in which to make lots of new friends and crochet as much as you like.

Want to improve – consider the Masters Program, enter a piece in one of the competitions. Shop till you drop in the market place, swap yarn with other crocheters. Enter a piece you have made into the Fashion Show.

If crochet is your job, designing, tech editing, testing, selling finished items then definitely – huge business benefits, talk to more experienced designers and ask them what their challenges are and have been.

Network, find people at a similar development stage to yourself. Spend time with the editors and the yarn companies to ask all the questions you want to on how you can progress. Professional Development Classes – learn how to move crochet from a hobby to your business.

Unforgettable Hazel 100th Birthday Blanket from Crochet 24/7

Wheelchair sized lapghan blanket crochet pattern. Lightweight, and soft, lots of texture from the variety of crochet stitches used, and beautiful roving colour changes from the Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable acrylic yarn.

Hazel is my husband’s Nanny; and Great Nanny to my daughters, and she will be celebrating her 100th Birthday at the end of July.

Although she managed to live independently into her early 90’s, a few ailments, meant she moved into a residential care home a few years ago.

Hazel can still walk small distances; with a wheeled walker, when she is feeling under the weather, she will use a wheelchair.

 

In the UK, when you reach your 100th birthday, you receive a personal telegram from the Queen, congratulating you, so this has all been arranged ready for her.

Along with the usual cake, to share with family; and the residents and care staff at the home. But, a present!,  “What do you get someone who is 100?”, and doesn’t want for anything, as their world becomes so much smaller, the older they become.

 

I gave it some thought, and then decided the perfect present would be to crochet her a really soft, lightweight, pretty, wheelchair sized blanket.

 

Hazel is tiny; under 5ft tall, with a very small frame, so I didn’t want the blanket to be too heavy, or overwhelm her.

 

The blanket/lapghan needed to be large enough to snuggle in, if she was feeling a bit cold watching television. Large enough to tuck around her in the wheelchair, whilst being wheeled around the care home; without catching in the wheels. Small enough to be portable, to be folded over her wheeled walker, to be reachable,  if needed.

 

The finished blanket size I designed is 36 1/2 inches wide by 24 inches, but could be easily customised to make larger or smaller as needed.

I am a massive fan of Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn, and I especially love the colour Tidal; a gorgeous palette of light teal, green, grey, and olive, the colour changes are soft and roving, and blend beautifully together.

This yarn is very easy to wash and is a super soft 100% acrylic with a silky drape. It both looks and feels luxurious, and was perfect for the very special blanket I wanted to design and crochet for Hazel.

 

When I was deciding what to name this blanket I was playing around in my head with the name of the yarn – Unforgettable – the occasion- this lovely sweet lady who has reached the amazing milestone of 100 – and whilst in very good health currently – sadly won’t be around, probably, for too many more years – and the wonderful song by Nat King Cole, she would have danced to, with her husband Jack – Unforgettable.

I love this song, it’s so timeless, and the words really make you think about all those you love and hold dear – and for all of us – our family members are Unforgettable.

I designed  and made the blanket for Hazel, and I hope that she will be making good use of it, for many more years to come.

HTR – Half Treble
TRC – Treble Crochet

Special Stitches Used : –

UK – TRC Cluster:- TR5TOG:- (5 Treble Crochets worked together in the same stitch)

*(Yarn round hook (yrh), insert hook into the stitch space pull loop through, yrh, pull through first 2 loops on the hook), *repeat 4 more times; yrh, pull through remaining 6 loops.

USA – DC Cluster:- DC5TOG:- (5 Double Crochets worked together in the same stitch)

*(Yarn round hook (yrh), insert hook into the stitch space pull loop through, yrh, pull through first 2 loops on the hook), *repeat 4 more times; yrh, pull through remaining 6 loops.

 

UK – Shell (5 Trebles in the same stitch)
USA – Shell (5 Double Crochets in the same stitch

 

UK – V-Stitch (Treble, CH1, Treble in the same stitch)
USA -V-Stitch (DC, CH1, DC in the same stitch)

 

Yarn Used: – Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable in Colour – Tidal, 100% Acrylic 100g balls 280 yards, 256 meters – I used 3 balls for this project and had about half of the third ball remaining.

Hook Size Used: – 9mm crochet hook, your project will grow quickly and be full of texture

Gauge: – 4” = 11 (US-HDC) or 11 (UK-HTR)

Additional Note:- The finished blanket- measures 36½ width and 24” height, I wanted a wide, short lapghan blanket that could be used easily in a wheelchair, and tucked in, without the person feeling they couldn’t move. The blanket could be made to any size you wanted though by just using the multiple of 3+2+1 for the foundation row.

Wheelchair sized lap blanket crochet pattern. Lightweight, and soft, lots of texture from the variety of crochet stitches used, and beautiful roving colour changes from the Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable acrylic yarn.

CH1 – Does not count as a stitch

CH3 – Counts as a stitch

CH4 – Counts as the first DC meaning the very first space to place a stitch, is already “used”

Multiple 3+2+1 for the foundation chain.

ROW 1:- CH 90, SC in 3rd CH from hook, SC in each CH to end of row. (88 SC), turn

ROW 2:- CH1, HDC in each SC, repeat across, (88 HDC), turn

ROW 3:- CH1, HDC using the front two loops in each HDC, repeat across, (88 HDC), turn

ROWS 4 through to 9 :- Repeat row 3

ROW 10:- CH4, DC Cluster in next HDC, *(CH1 Skip 1, DC Cluster in next HDC) * repeat across, after last DC Cluster CH1, Skip 1, DC in last HDC. (43 Clusters), turn

ROW 11:- CH1, SC (in 1st DC), SC in CH1 space (under stitch, not through), SC in top of Cluster (3rd SC), SC in the CH1 space, and continue across, SC in top of last Cluster, SC in CH1 space, SC in 3rd CH of previous row. (88 SC)

ROW 12:- CH4, DC Cluster in next SC, *(CH1 Skip 1, DC Cluster in next SC) * repeat across, after last DC Cluster CH1, Skip 1, DC in last SC. (43 Clusters), turn

ROW 25:- CH4, V stitch in 3rd DC of 1st Cluster (4 stitches in between each V made), repeat across making a V stitch in the 3rd DC of each Cluster, DC in 3rd CH of previous CH3. (29 V-stitch)

ROW 26:- CH3, Skip 1, Shell in CH1 space of each V. stitch (29 Shells)

ROW 27:- Repeat Row 25 (29 V stitch)

ROW 28:- Repeat Row 26 (29 Shells)

ROW 29:- Repeat Row 25 (29 V stitch)

ROW 30:- CH1, SC across in every DC and each CH1 space (88 SC) (Check your count!)

Border:- Crochet all around your blanket with 2 rows of SC, evenly spread with an SC/CH1/SC on each corner.

Cut your yarn, leaving a tail to weave in. Pull yarn through final loop on hook and then weave in the end to hide.
