Ocean Kiss Summer Collection

Guys, you have blown me away with how much you all love the Ocean Kiss Summer Collection!

Thank-you, it really means a lot to have all your positive feedback.

I have noticed that a huge number of you are based in USA/Canada/and Australia. You may or may not know but I live in London, in the UK, so naturally, although I have added the stitch conversion, my patterns have to date been written in UK crochet terms.

Part of the reason for this originally, is also that I sell printed copies of the patterns, at local UK craft fairs.

Anyway, I decided this morning, to edit all of the Ocean Kiss PDF patterns in Ravelry, and the blog posts for the free patterns for the Ocean Kiss Summer Scarf and the Ocean Kiss Summer Wrap. All of you who have purchased the patterns, should have received an updated version from me, this morning, please contact me by email if you have not received!

The new version separates out the full instructions for each pattern into a USA terms and UK terms so it’s much easier for you to follow your preference. I will make the same changes to my other patterns too, but I wanted to prioritise the Ocean Kiss Summer Collection, because so many of you are keen to get started.

I only started designing in January this year, so I am still very new and learning all the time on how I can help you best; and I really do welcome all of your feedback! Look out for the Winter Collection – not done with this stitch pattern yet!

Ocean Kiss Summer Shawl Crochet Pattern

Ocean Kiss Summer Shawl

Did you love the stitch pattern of the Ocean Kiss Summer Poncho but prefer a shawl? I listened! It wasn’t easy, but I can finally now show you the 4th pattern in my Ocean Kiss Summer Collection, the Ocean Kiss Summer Shawl!

This is the first time I have designed a triangular shawl, the Ocean Kiss Summer Shawl starts at the top, working down increasing every row with an extra stitch on each end, and two more in the centre space. As the stitch pattern works on a multiple of 3 and I am increasing by 4, some rows work out perfectly, but a few needed a slight tweak.

I crocheted two samples up quite quickly, but when I came to write up the pattern I found myself checking and rechecking the stitch counts. Anyway,the good news is that I have given you the row stitch counts so you can work your way through easily checking your stitches.

I used 1 whole ball of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, if you have read my previous posts you know how much I love this yarn for it’s lightness, softness, and just stunning colour mixes. The 150 g ball just goes on and on and it’s brilliant to be able to get a whole shawl from one ball.

I just had enough, but I kept quite a loose tension, if you found yourself running out, you could alter the last row which is a cluster, and finish on a double crochet instead.

My finished shawl size is 54″ by 31″.

The Ocean Kiss Summer Wrap is the 3rd pattern released from my Ocean Kiss Summer Collection, this time using the whole of one ball of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball in Wind Chimes which has a beautiful silver metallic effect thread running through it. It really twinkles in bright sunlight.

If this is your first visit to my site then you will soon discover that I am a very big fan of Lion Brand yarn, and particularly Shawl in a Ball. The Ocean Kiss Summer Collection uses Opal and Wind Chimes as the colours to highlight the patterns, but the whole range is lovely, with some stunning colour combinations.

UK – DTRX:- (Double Treble “X” shape worked over 3 stitches)

Yarn round hook (yrh) twice, insert hook in next DC, yrh, pull loop through, yrh, pull loop through first 2 loops on hook, skip the next DC, yrh, insert hook into next DC, yrh, pull loop through, (yrh, pull loop through 2 loops on hook) 4 times, CH1, yrh, insert hook into bottom space of the X you are making, yrh, pull loop through, (yrh, pull loop though 2 loops) twice

USA – TRX:- (Treble “X” shape worked over 3 stitches)

Yarn Used: – Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball 61% cotton, 34% acrylic, 5% other, 473m, 150g balls – I used one ball for this project.

Hook Size Used: – 9mm crochet hook, your project will grow quickly and have a lovely open lace effect.

Gauge: – 3.5” horizontal 3 “X” Stitches, or 9 HTR (USA – HDC) ; 3.5” vertical – one repeat of Rows 2-7

Additional Pattern Note:- The finished wrap measures 80” in length and 9 1/2 inches wide. If you want it to be longer use the multiple I have added, divisible by 3, then add 2, and add 1 just for your starting chain. Prefer it wider? You will need a second ball of yarn to crochet another repeat of rows 13-22.

CH1 – Does not count as a stitch

CH4 – Counts as the first TRC stitch on “X” rows, meaning the very first space to place a stitch, is already “used”. And also counts as the first DC/CH1 on TRC Cluster rows.

Hi all

So here as promised the Ocean Kiss Summer Scarf, using the same decorative stitch pattern I used for the Ocean Kiss Summer Poncho. If you made, or are intending to make the poncho, and use Shawl in a Ball from Lion Brand then you will have found yourself with approx 100g spare!

Following feedback from some USA/Canada ladies finding it difficult to convert the stitches, I have just amended the pattern details below to include both USA terms and UK terms separately!

The Ocean Kiss Summer Scarf is my solution for you, as it only needs 100g and if you have a little less than that; it’s simple to reduce the number of rows, to make a skinnier scarf, as this pattern works along the long edge, end to end.

With Shawl in a Ball, is maybe a little pricier than some yarns you are used to, you get so much high quality yarn for your bucks.

An amazing 481 yards and 150g, of a gorgeous brushed acrylic with 100% cotton slub. It has the look and feel of silk mohair, and none of the itchiness. With just 2 balls, you will be able to make both the Ocean Kiss Summer Poncho, and the Ocean Kiss Summer Scarf!

Hi everyone, how are you all,

We have been having a bit of a heatwave here in the UK, of course it has rained as well, but it wouldn’t be the UK if it didn’t.

Anyway, it got me thinking about my holiday to Spain; coming up in August, and I decided to design something I could wear in the evening, a lightweight lacy poncho would be perfect, as I often find the air conditioning too cold in restaurants.

I am so excited to bring you another design using the fabulous Shawl in a Ball from Lion Brand, this time a poncho called Ocean Kiss Summer Poncho. You can see in the small picture below a close up of one of the stitches a large “X”, hence Kiss!

The beautiful colour in the feature picture above is called Wind Chimes. It has an ombre colour effect, from lightest to darkest blue denim shades, with a silver metallic look thread running through.

For those who are not familiar with Shawl in a Ball it’s from Lion Brand based in the USA. Each colour is a cotton/acrylic mix 150g balls 61% cotton, 34% acrylic, 5% other, 473m.

It has a fuzziness to it, which adds to the soft appeal and gives garments a high end mohair type appearance, without the itchiness. Overall, it’s an Aran weight but does go a little thick and thin in places.

It’s hard to find in the UK, although I do sell it in my online store , if you are in USA/Canada etc. then you have plenty of choices – of course Amazon.com carry it too!

One drawback with Shawl in a Ball is that because it’s an ombre, when it’s in a ball, it’s really hard to photograph, and in the store, you would probably walk past it, not realising what a fascinating palette of colours each ball can produce.

This yarn is just so easy to design with and once again I used… yes you guessed it … my 9mm hook!

With the larger hook it’s just so easy to achieve the lacy airy look I love, giving the poncho a wonderful drape; and a softness you just want to reach out and touch.

I decided to model for you, for the pictures, as I just wouldn’t have been able to do the poncho design justice by just showing it on my little mannequin!

So apologies! I tried my best not to look too cheeeeeesy in the photos!

But maybe sometimes it’s nice for you to see the actual person behind the brand Crochet 24/7!

You can see I wore white underneath the poncho, and hopefully that gives you all some ideas for your own summer wardrobe!

This poncho squashes down to a tiny corner of your evening bag. Then it’s ready for you to pull out if the air conditioning is a little high, or you have gone for an after dinner stroll, and then find it’s a little cooler, as the sun is setting.

I was undecided which sample colour was my favourite, I love them both. I have gone with the blue for my marketing, but have also added an extra picture of the Opal (Grey), if you have a preference to Pin! to save to your Pinterest board.

Wondering where I came up with the name for my summer collection? I very nearly called it the Ocean Whisper collection because I made the first sample in Opal and the yarn is soft as a whisper.

Also, I found this beautiful piece of music called Ocean Whisper which just transported me to directly to my holiday sun-lounger!

The Ocean Kiss pattern is intermediate level, and uses a 7-row repeating pattern that will be easy to memorise.

If you want to use Shawl in a Ball to make Ocean Kiss, you will need 2 balls, although you will only be using 50g of the second ball (if you make the same size that I did); and I will be releasing another related pattern for a summer scarf, to use the remainder of the second ball!

I am 5 ft 4, and a UK size 12-14 on my top half, the sample poncho is designed to be one-size for UK 8-16. If you need it/prefer it, to be larger, to be more comfortable, you can easily adapt the width, and therefore the depth at the back and front, by increasing your starting chain.

The Ocean Kiss poncho can be worn as a V-neck, or you can turn it, and wear it off one shoulder.

In terms of construction if you have been crocheting for a while and want to challenge yourself with the stitches, in terms of maybe your first garment, the Ocean Kiss would be perfect.

Once you have the 7 row repeat mastered, you just repeat rows 2-7, you are crocheting a long rectangle, with just one seam at the end to complete. Banana Split Ice Cream Cowl

Banana Split Ice Cream Cowl – an easy and fun beginner+ crochet pattern for a child’s scarf/cowl

– great quick project to help you learn some new crochet stitches and to practise counting your stitches!

Lion Brand recently sent me a ball of their gorgeous yarn called Ice Cream, which although popular in the US is not so well known here in the UK.

The yarn is 100% soft acrylic, and a sport weight, also known as 5-ply, which sits between a 4-ply and a DK. Each ball is 100g, but seems huge, because you have a whopping 394 yards (360m) to play around with.

Then add in the fact that the yarn is available in 21 self-striping options, ranging from the bright and cheerful Birthday Cake, to the more muted neutral shades of Cookies and Cream, incidentally, all of the range are named after yummy desserts!

The yarn I received is called Banana Split; a gorgeous mix of lemon, orange, lilac, duck egg, and white; and ideal for baby and children’s items, I managed to get a couple of rows of each colour change.

Now, I must admit, as you all, already know, I don’t generally design with children in mind, and actually I have never attempted to crochet for babies or young children. My twin girls are almost 16, and as I only started crocheting a couple of years ago, sadly I missed out on that early-years making stage.

So, when the yarn first arrived, I really felt out of my comfort zone with the bright colours, and I was initially a bit stumped on what to make with it. Then, I decided the colours reminded me of a day at the beach with buckets and spades, and certainly in the UK, on most days, even when it’s really sunny, the wind can still be cold.

I have also been reflecting for a while, about that time period, when you have just learned to crochet, mastered the basics, and you are looking for easyish patterns, that also stretch you a little, without feeling overwhelmed, and giving up before you finish the item.

I decided to combine the two and have designed a child’s sized cowl, using rows of double and treble crochet,that a beginner would feel comfortable with; and alternating with rows of some of my favourite decorative stitches.

Because this is a child’s sized cowl, only 24 stitches across, a beginner can try a short row of something new, and then head back to complete a couple of rows of stitches they know well, maybe this would also be a good project for a child learning to crochet, to make something they can wear themselves.

The Banana Split Ice Cream Cowl is designed for a younger child to wear long as it is, and/or double up when more warmth is needed, although sized up the pattern could easily be adapted for a teenager/adult.

I think it’s a great beginner+ project, enabling you to easily practise some new crochet stitches in short rows.

(We have all been there, when you get to the end of a 200 stitch row, and find you are one stitch out, somewhere; usually because you placed your very first stitch incorrectly!)

With this easy cowl, if you make a mistake it’s easy to undo, and begin again at the start of the row, it will also help you to practise counting your stitches, and also what you count as a stitch, which I found really difficult to remember, for a long time.

1 ball was sufficient for this project, I used around 85g of the Ice Cream yarn, you would easily have enough over to make a little matching headband (now there is an idea!) or flower embellishment.

Difficulty Level: – Easy suitable for a beginner + – who has a basic knowledge of stitches, no change of yarn needed.

Special Stitches: –

Bobble Stitch:- Bobble stitch is several half closed stitches made in the same stitch, and then joined together, to finish the stitch.

We will half close 3 Treble Crochets – to start – Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops; yarn over, insert back into same stitch, yarn over, pull through (4 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops; yarn over insert back into same stitch, yarn over, pull through (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull though remaining 4 loops.

Cross Stitch:- (2 Treble Crochets making an X)

Skip one stitch, Treble Crochet in next stitch, then go back to your skipped stitch and make another Treble Crochet and you will have formed an X.

It doesn’t matter if you go through the front or the back to reach the skipped stitch, as long as you are consistent.

6mm crochet hook – a 4mm crochet hook is advised by the yarn company, but I have used a 6mm for a more open and loose effect with the stitch pattern.

Gauge: – Rows 1-10 measure 7.5” width and 3.25” high.

CH3 – Counts as the first TRC stitch throughout, meaning the very first space to place a stitch, is already “used”.

Rows 1-40 for my sample scarf measures 16” x 7.5” so a repeat would give you a scarf length of 32”. Once you have mastered the stitches, you don’t have to stick to my sequence, you can mix it up if you like some stitches more than others.

Seaming together:-

To finish bring the short ends together, and crochet a seam, I made a DC through the stitches on both sides as I like the seam to be noticeable.

Stroke Me Soother Twiddle Muff Dementia Care

Have you heard about the Twiddle Muff ?

A twiddle muff, also called a fidget muff, or hand sensory blanket is essentially a tube shape of various materials; usually yarn, used to give people living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia; warmth and comfort, and providing some sensory stimulation, to keep their hands occupied when they feel agitated.

A close family member of mine has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; and whilst researching the illness, I came across the concept of the Twiddle Muff.

Whilst they can be made of yarn or material, I learned that many crafting groups – mainly knitters, have been making them and donating to Alzheimer’s and Dementia care homes.

Two things struck me. Firstly, all of the ones I could find were knitted – I only found one pattern for crochet!

And without wishing to offend anyone, as all designs have their rightful place, many were made with end scraps of leftover yarn from other projects. They were all very colourful and childlike in appearance, especially when adding buttons, zips, sealed pockets of marbles to aid sensory stimulation, which as the illness progresses are very relevant to the individual, and can be customised to reflect their previous hobbies and interest.

I wanted to design an alternative – something really pretty, in soft neutrals and toning colours and luxuriously soft and squishy like your favourite scarf or blanket, that you want to touch and stroke.

The lady close to me, may be struggling to remember who takes sugar in their tea, and asking family 10 times or more “what time we are leaving the house?”. But she also still makes sure her top colour matches her skirt, curls her own hair; and applies her lipstick.

This lady has always taken a pride in her appearance; and to use a Welsh expression ensured she looked “tidy”. I couldn’t imagine gifting this particular lady with one of the childlike Twiddle Muffs, – although as I mentioned in the later stages of the illness, maybe they are then entirely appropriate.

Yet, she has taken to wearing gloves around the house, because her hands are always cold, and unless she is kept busy, will become agitated, and constantly check the contents of her handbag.

In the UK, (where I live), next week 14-20 May 2017 is Dementia Awareness Week – for those of who are maybe not aware – ” Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer. But awareness and understanding remains low, and many families are facing it alone.” (source:-Alzheimer’s Society,UK).

So putting aside some other designs I have been working on, I thought ………

“I know, I’ll design a crochet pattern version of the Twiddle Muff” and make it luxuriously soft, using the combination of beautiful yarn and varying crochet stitches to provide the sensory stimulation. By releasing it in time for the awareness week I can also do my bit to help improve understanding of the condition.

I visited my local yarn shop and selected luxuriously soft yarns; with varying textures and toning colours, to use in my design for the twiddle muff. I ended up designing two, a large size that could also be used as a lap blanket, and a smaller version, just for those cold hands.

I called my design Stroke Me Soother Twiddle Muff , because believe me the yarn is so very soft, you are naturally drawn to stroking it.

The yarns I used were King Cole Yummy in Cream and Mint 100% polyester – a chunky velvet like texture unbelievably soft. Wendy Eider Chunky 80% Nylon 20% Polyester in Ecru which gives a soft fur like appearance (hence the stroking part of the name). Rico Fashion Cotton Big 100% Cotton in Mint, a chunky cotton I made a crochet rib with for added texture.

I am really happy with how they turned out, and wanted to share the patterns with all my crochet friends who may know someone who would love one of these to cuddle with.

The patterns are easy to follow and and there is no set number of stitches, so you could customise this to whatever size you prefer, and repeat any rows to get to the size you like.

The two pattern details and final measurements are below for anyone who would like to follow my pattern.

Yarn A – Rico Fashion Cotton Big 100% Cotton Chunky 50 g/50 m- Mint

Yarn B – King Cole Yummy 100% Polyester 100 g/120 m Chunky – Cream

Yarn C – Wendy Eider Chunky 80% Nylon, 20% Polyester 100 g/150 m – Ecru

Yarn D – King Cole Yummy 100% Polyester 100 g/120 m Chunky – Mint

Hook Size Used: – 7 mm crochet hook – (the yarns I used recommended a 6mm hook), I went up to 7 mm.

Gauge: – using Yummy 3” square = 8 TRC x 4 rows

Instructions written using UK crochet terms.

Begin with Yarn A (Mint Cotton) to make a thin strip of rib effect.

ROW 1:- CH7, DC 2nd from the hook, DC in each CH across (5 DC) turn,
ROW 2:- CH1 (does not count as a stitch), DC across in back loop only, turn (5 DC)
ROWS 3-50 (approx.) Repeat Row 2 until you have a long thin rib strip measuring 22 inches regardless of how many rows you have take

ROW 1:- Turn your work, and working across either of the wide edges, evenly DC 68 (68 DC)

ROW 2:- CH1 (counts as 1st DC), DC in each DC and repeat across (68 DC)

ROW 3:- Repeat ROW 2 (68 DC)

ROW 23:- CH5 (does not count as first stitch), Skip 1st DC, TTC, CH1, Skip 1, repeat across, TTC in CH3 previous row. (34 TTC)

ROW 24:- CH1, DC in each CH1 stitch, and the top of each TTC, DC in 5th CH of previous row. (68 DC)

ROW 25:- CH3, TRC in each DC, repeat across (68 TRC)

ROW 26:- Repeat Row 25.

Join Yarn C – (Eider Ecru)

ROW 27:- CH2, HTR in each TRC, repeat across (68 HTR)

Join YARN B (Yummy – Cream)

Seaming together

When I got to this stage my flat rectangle measured 19” height and 29” width, it doesn’t really matter if yours is slightly different. Also with using different textures of yarn, it’s difficult not to get an uneven edge.

If it bothers you, block it before seaming the side, but once it’s seamed, if you have an uneven edge, it won’t show.

Fold the piece in half width-ways, bringing the short sides together ready to seam.

CH1 and turn your work, still using Yarn B, continue using an even number of HTR close into a tube shape by crocheting a chunky prominent seam, you can leave the seam showing on the outside, or if you prefer a hidden seam turn inside out, or use your own preferred method to seam together, such as mattress seam.

When you get to the end of the seam, turn your work again, and still using Yarn B crochet a slip stitch all around the edge of the rib crochet narrow end you began with, repeat this 4 more times to give a velvety edge and then fasten off, and hide the ends from your colour changes.

I then added a couple of toning silky touch ribbons, but you can decorate further as you wish, and according to the taste of the person it’s for.

My finished Twiddle Muff measured 9” narrow end x 21”x 14” wide end.

Stroke Me Soother Crochet Twiddle Muff Hand Sized giving warmth and sensory stimulation, velvet soft and fur yarn sections.

My first design ended up larger than I originally intended, although I really love the finished item. So I decided to use up the remaining yarn and make a second smaller one – just for hands.

Here are the instructions for the smaller version with just a few minor changes.

Begin with Yarn A (Mint Cotton)

ROW 1:- CH7, DC 2nd from the hook, DC in each CH across (5 DC) turn,
ROW 2:- CH1 (does not count as a stitch), DC across in back loop only, turn (5 DC)
ROWS 3-25:- Repeat Row 2, to form a long thin strip of rib effect, measuring 12 inches.

ROW 1:- Turn your work, and working across either of the wide edges, evenly DC 30 (30 DC)

ROW 2:- CH1 (counts as a stitch), DC in each DC and repeat across (30 DC)

ROW 3:- Repeat ROW 2 (30 DC)

Join Yarn D – (Yummy Mint)

ROW 4:- CH3 (counts as 1 TRC) 1 TRC in each DC and repeat across (30 TRC)

ROW 5-8:- Repeat ROW 4, last TRC in turning chain (30 TRC)

ROW 9:- CH1, DC in each TRC, repeat across (30 DC)

Join Yarn C (Eider Ecru)

Row 10:- CH2, HTR in each DC, and repeat across (30 HTR)

ROW 11:- CH1, DC in each HTR, and repeat across (30 DC)

ROW 12-19:- Repeat Row 11

Join Yarn D – (Yummy Mint)

ROW 20:- CH1, DC across (30 DC)

ROW 21:- CH 4, (doesn’t count as a stitch), TTC in first DC, CH1, Skip 1, repeat across, TTC in last DC. (15 TTC + CH4)

ROW 22:- CH1, DC in each CH1, and the top of each TTC, DC in 5th CH of previous starting CH. (30 DC)

Join Yarn C – (Eider Ecru)

ROW 23:- CH2, HTR in each TRC, repeat across (30 HTR)

ROW 24:- CH1, DC in each HTR, repeat across (30 DC)

ROW 25-32:- Repeat Row 24 (30 DC)

Join Yarn D (Yummy – Mint)

ROW 33:- CH1, DC in each DC, repeat across (30 DC)

ROW 34:- CH3, TRC in each DC, repeat across (30 TRC)

ROW 35-38:- Repeat Row 34

Fasten off.

Seaming together

Fold the piece in half widthways, bringing the short sides together ready to seam your tube.

Join Yarn C, and using HTR crochet the sides together, then I decided as I had plenty of this yarn left to make a feature furry seam, so I continued with 4/5 rows of HTR.

My finished Twiddle Muff Small measured 16” in length, narrow rib end 7” (includes 1” of fur) and wider end (Yummy TRC) 8”

Azure Skies Crochet Cowl Pattern

The Azure Skies Crochet Cowl Pattern is the second in the series I have designed for those in-between days when you don’t want the bulk or weight of a longer cowl, but still need a layer of warmth around your neck, or to fold into a lightweight jacket or cardigan, with a pop of colour.

Azure Skies Crochet Cowl Pattern

Azure Skies has the same lovely broomstick lace crochet stitch as my Dolly Mixture Sweetie Crochet Cowl Pattern, adding to the texture, achieved by using a 15mm needle and a 5.5mm crochet hook. It was a bit of a happy accident that the colour changes lend themselves so well to the number of stitches used for each row.

Difficulty Level: – Intermediate due to more challenging combination of stitches, not suitable for a beginner.

Stitches Used: –

UK TERMS

CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
DC – Double Crochet
TRC – Treble Crochet

USA TERMS

CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Used – Broomstick Lace:-

The lace is made up of two rows, one row of large loops made with a 15mm needle (or whatever you have handy), followed by a row of lace, made by capturing groups of loops, secured with the equivalent number of double crochets to keep the stitch count for the row at 40.

Pull up the yarn of your working stitch from your crochet hook, and transfer it onto the knitting needle, insert your crochet hook into the back loop only of the next DC, pull the yarn through the back loop and add the loop you have made to the knitting needle, pulling snug, repeat across (40 loops).

Remove the knitting needle from all of the loops, then using your crochet hook slide the first 5 loops onto the crochet hook; yarn over, draw through all 5 loops, and secure with an SS to lock in place (does not count as a stitch).

Making sure you go through the middle (the eye) of the 5 loop lace group; make 5 DC, grabbing the yarn from behind the group. For the remaining groups you don’t need the locking SS, just go ahead capturing the groups of 5 loops with 5 DC in each group.

At the end of the row you will have 8 groups of 5 loops secured by 40 DC.

Note:- be careful when capturing the group of 5 loops that the next loop along (that would be the 6th loop) does not disappear when the yarn tugs a bit as you are making the 5 DC.

What do you need?

Yarn Used: – King Cole DK Sprite – Rhodes – (100% premium acrylic, 100g, 328 yds, 300m).

This yarn comes in a gorgeous palette of beautifully muted multi tonal shades; all named after Mediterranean islands and is a 4 weight. It varies very slightly in thickness in places.

The colour mix of Rhodes, is a dreamy mix of shades of blue and lilac. 1 ball was sufficient for this project.

Crochet Hook:- 5.5mm crochet hook; and a 15mm knitting needle (or equivalent) for the broomstick loops; a 4mm crochet hook is advised by the yarn company, but for this project I have used a 5.5mm.

Gauge:- not important for this project, but try to keep an even tension and consistency with the size of the loops you pull up.

Instructions written using UK crochet terms.

ROW 1:- CH 41, DC 2nd from the hook, DC in each CH across (40 DC) turn,
ROW 2:- CH 3 (counts as 1 TRC), TRC across, turn (40 TRC)
ROW 3:- Transfer your starting stitch to your 15mm needle, make Broomstick Loops from back loop only of each DC (40 Loops),

ROW 4:- Remove loops from needle, insert crochet hook into first loop and pick up a further four, yarn over and secure with an SS (does not count as a stitch), make 5 DC into the centre eye of the group of 5 loops, ( for the next group of 5 loops you don’t need to do the SS); repeat for each group of 5 loops, turn

You should now have 8 groups of 5 loops, with 40 DC on the top.

ROW 5:- Repeat Row 3

ROW 6:- Repeat Row 4

ROW 7:- Repeat Row 2

REPEAT ROWS 3-7 until the cowl reaches your desired length, (I used the whole of the ball) finishing on a row of TRC, and remembering to leave yourself enough yarn to connect the ends.

To finish bring the short ends together, and crochet a seam, I made a DC through the stitches on both sides as I like the seam to be noticeable. You may prefer to use the mattress method.

Additional Pattern Notes:-

The cowl is unblocked, and my finished measurements were 41” long and 7” wide, which is a nice length for a spring/summer cowl; that doesn’t need to be double wrapped for warmth.

The broomstick lace stitch can be a little tricky to master, so I had a look on YouTube; and found this great tutorial from Moogly.

The Stash! Confessions of a yarn addict

How much yarn do you have in your stash?

You don’t have to give me the answer, but think about your stash truthfully!

Do you have more than you could use in your lifetime? Or at least a few years!
Always find a reason to buy more?
Are you continually re-organising your storage to squeeze more in to your stash?
Do you hoard your most expensive high quality yarn for a special pattern you are yet to find!
- – but when you see it, you will know it, and you will be so ready, with that yarn!

Hmm! Sorry, to say it, but, you may just be like myself – a bit of (or maybe a lot of)

a yarn addict!

That’s it!

I said it out loud – “I have way more yarn than I need, and I have a “super expensive collection” of alpaca/silk mixed skeins in a variety of neutral hues “treated myself”; that I may never, ever use!”

Let’s talk about when, and why we purchase.

For me, yarn browsing/shopping is like an entire hobby in itself.

It’s a bit like grocery shopping when you are hungry. You get to the check-out with a basket of food, with sell-by dates; that you cannot possibly eat in time.

The same happens for me, when I go to the yarn shop.

I don’t have any particular pattern or project in my mind – so I am completely open; to any type of weight, brand, colour, fibre mix; that just jumps out at me.

Of course, as I don’t know what the yarn might turn into, I am also purchasing whatever quantity I can afford, or think, will be sufficient for my imaginary project.

I am shopping blindly, without any consideration for what may already be in my stash at home.

Generally, we all have a colour palette we prefer, and this is often swayed by;

our mood on the day,
what colour we may have dressed in for our outing to the yarn shop,
or something that has triggered a feeling, for a must have colour
of the feel, its just so soft and silky we have to have it

We leave the shop feeling excited and happy, swinging our bag of skeins.

Home!

Then,

we get home, and we start to feel a bit guilty; not much, just a little, at this stage.

What do you do with your yarn when you get home? Do you leave your purchase in the bag? Or, do you try and find somewhere to store it, with your other yarn?

Do you start immediately thinking what pattern it would suit? or even what type of crochet accessory or garment it could be made into?

My confession; the more expensive the yarn was, the more likely it will be, to make it to the ” I am a luxurious, expensive yarn, awaiting a very special pattern collection box” – you’ve got one of these too, right? Almost a secret stash.

You tell yourself; “I will make something for myself!”, because the finished product would be too expensive to sell for a profit, you wouldn’t be able to justify the price to the potential customer.

Then,

it becomes just like that special outfit or shoe purchase, “you know what I am talking about” that you have hidden away in your wardrobe.

The week’s pass you by, and the longer you leave it, before that first wearing, the more likely it is that you will never wear it.

You don’t have the occasion,
I just need to lose a little weight, before it looks good,
It’s the wrong time of year to wear it.

And there it hangs; making you feel guilty, so … you move it to a different wardrobe so you don’t have to look at it.

Isn’t it just the same thing with your expensive yarn? – it stays right there, in the special collection box, hidden away in your stash, waiting patiently for that special pattern.

Sometimes, you even forget it’s there, until you find yourself, repeating the purchase sequence.

Another day comes, when you were, so yarn hungry; you get home, you go to the special collection box in your stash, with your latest skein, and then …….?

Do you feel better?

Feels good doesn’t it? Confessing?
