Garden Kisses Jute Crochet Placemat
Hi everyone
I am in a great mood today, how about you? The beautiful weather we had in the UK for Easter has continued, and as a consequence everyone is spending more time in their garden!
The garden centres are busy as people flock there to stock up on the latest bedding plants, new flowering trees etc. Now I don’t know about you, but gardening just isn’t my thing. We have an almost zero maintenance garden with black bamboo and another bush/hedge type thing that grows quite tall; and the leaves change colour a couple of times a year.
Other than my hubby cutting the grass and cleaning the decking; cos those are guy jobs right! For me – no gardening and zero maintenance.
So what to do to add a little colour? Well, the brightly coloured jute for tying plants etc. caught my eye as I made my way through to the coffee shop – what you thought I was there to buy plants! Oh dear me no, it has a scrumptious coffee and cake shop inside; where I was meeting my friend.
Back to the coloured jute! I decided to see if it would crochet, and after a little experimentation with hook sizes and stitches, I came up with the placemat above to use outside. Now I won’t lie, the jute is a little rough on your hands so I did take a couple of breaks to apply handcream. However, I am really pleased with the result.
The pattern is inspired by my Ocean Kiss pattern combination but omits the cluster I usually use in the top of the X stitch as it just didn’t work with the jute. But the other stitches USA – SC, HDC,/ UK DC, HTC worked really well giving a little texture but still allowing the placemat to stay flat and keep it;s shape.
The finished size of my placemat is 19″ by 11″ but you can make them any size you like. The multiple just needs to be a number divisble by 3, then add 2, and add 1 for the chain.
As always you have the choice see below of following the pattern with the USA terminology or the UK terminology, whichever you prefer.
Let me know if you like the pattern and I would love to see what colour you make – share your photos in my crochet group on Facebook Crochet 24/7 Club, click here for the link, if you are not already a member, we would love to have you join.
Prefer an inexpensive PDF of the pattern, then you can find it in my Ravelry store by clicking here
