Merlot Bliss Cowl
Luxurious, soft, warm, and just so squishy, you will never want to take this beautiful and stylish cowl off.
So, it happens to all of us crafters doesn’t it? I was just browsing through a yarn store, checking out what they had; and came across this gorgeous Sirdar Alpine – in a beautiful shade of Merlot. The Alpine is a luxuriously soft faux fur made of 100% polyester and comes in lots of lovely colours; mainly aimed at toy makers for teddy bears, and other animals.
I had not seen the Merlot colour before, but it was calling my name and saying “Make me into something beautiful!” and the way it just jumped out at me, I really had no choice! Ha! Ha!
I had the idea straight away for a design for a cowl, but using the fur through the middle, rather than the more usual method perhaps of using it as a trim, or border.
In my mind’s eye I was rapidly going through my stash at home, thinking what I might have to match it with; and then, remembered, I had some Lion Brand Heartland in Black Canyon that would probably work well.
When I got home, I immediately went into my craft room to check what I had, and I had a brilliant surprise. I knew I also had the Lion Brand Heartland shade Badlands, which I purchased on one of my trips to the US last year. I designed a short beginner’s level cowl called One Stitch Cowl (click here if you are also interested in this free pattern) with it, and loved the colour.
Well my surprise, was that the Sirdar Alpine Fur actually matched beautifully with the Badlands shade, and then my design head just went into overdrive, creatively considering all the options.
In the end, I decided to make the main body of the cowl in Badlands, and then to ensure the Alpine Fur really popped; set it off by rows either side of it using the Black Canyon.
I literally dropped all my other WIP’s and got started the same evening, finished it the next day, and I am so in love with this design, I really hope you love it too.
If you want to make the Merlot Bliss Cowl in the same colours as mine then you will need Lion Brand Heartland in two colours; 1 and a half balls of Badlands, and half a ball of Black Canyon. Then, from Sirdar Alpine Luxe Fur Effect the shade I am calling Merlot actually just has a number which is SH0405, and you will need 1 ball.
I warn you this combination is addictive, and I am already working on some matching accessories! Coming very soon!
