Simply Iris Shawl
For my beginner crochet friends! Looking for a new project, just use one stitch double crochet and chains to create a pretty pattern that looks way more intricate than it is? Need to practise counting your stitches?
Simply Iris Shawl – an easy stitch pattern for a beginner!
In the image below you can see a close up of how effective this pretty stitch is; and yet it uses just double crochets and chains, even the optional border I added is double crochets.
When you first learn to crochet it can be quite daunting trying to choose patterns and projects that you want to make. I remember buying patterns, and then feeling a bit overwhelmed when I read them, and unsure if I could cope with the pattern.

I have designed the Simply Iris Collection of patterns with this in mind, you can create a beautiful stitch pattern using just double crochets and chains if you are in the US; or treble crochets and chains if you are in the UK! If you like this pattern then keep a look out as I release the other patterns in the collection coming soon!
There are lots of videos on YouTube explaining the Iris Stitch so please refresh yourself with the stitch before you begin the pattern. Here is one that I think is nice and clear from my friend Heather at Unravelled Mitten http://theunraveledmitten.com/2018/03/30/iris-stitch-crochet-tutorial/
Counting is another tricky area when you first begin so I have given you lots of explanation in the pattern on where to put your first and last stitches on a row, stitch counts for every row, and instructions on how to count particular rows where you are missing stitches but counting spaces to set your row up nicely with a partial IRIS to keep the pattern as you expand the triangle.
My pattern starts in the top middle of the triangle and builds outwards increasing on each end of row, and in the middle centre stitch, to keep the basic triangle shape in place as it grows.
I have made this shawl seven times since I first designed it, and as long as your read the instructions carefully, particularly at each end and in the middle of the triangle in terms of placing your next Iris or a partial Iris, you will be fine and be able to relax into your crocheting.
In terms of colour options, I have shown you three variations :- 3 colours, 2 colours, or the fastest option – make it all in one colour.
You can use any dk yarn for this project but if you like my colours, then all of the yarn I used is from Sirdar and their premium range Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk dk, I have added all the shade numbers in the pattern. It’s a beautiful yarn to crochet with, giving really pretty stitch definition.
Sublime comes in a broad range of brights and neutrals that tone together beautifully, or you can clash them on purpose as I have with the two shades of pink, or have a beautiful neutral in one colour as I have with the image in Taupe.
